Pair of Late 19th Century Victorian Mahogany Library Chairs

£400.00

A handsome, structurally sound pair of late Victorian mahogany library or desk chairs, circa 1880.

Exhibiting classic period craftsmanship, each chair features a beautifully curved spade backrest, elegant open scrolling armrests, and distinctively turned, ring-detailed front legs. The undersides showcase an authentic window into their history, featuring traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery, aged old-growth timber, and hand-stretched hessian webbing secured by irregular, hand-hammered iron upholstery tacks.

At some point in the mid-to-late 20th century, the seats were professionally reupholstered in a practical bottle-green vinyl/leatherette accented with modern brass nailhead trim. While the vinyl is functional and ready for immediate use, the exceptional structural integrity of the mahogany frames makes this pair prime candidates for eventual reupholstery in period-accurate leather if desired. A beautifully characterful addition to a home office, library, or curated studio space.

  • Provenance: English, late 19th century.

  • Condition: Excellent structural condition. Frame joints are tight with no notable wobbles. The wood displays a lovely natural patina and minor surface wear consistent with age. The green vinyl is intact with no rips or deep scuffs.
