Aly Louis
Based in Arlington, Virginia, Louis creates intuitive abstract paintings shaped by emotion and movement that follow the rhythm of the feminine body and natural world. Rooted in design yet led by instinct, her work balances structure and feeling to create compositions that feel intimate and alive.

- Aly Louis
BiographyAly Louis is a contemporary abstract artist based in Northern Virginia. She graduated from the Corcoran School of the Arts & Design in 2021 with a B.F.A. in Graphic Design, and her background in design continues to shape the way she approaches painting. Through balance—and often intentional imbalance—she creates movement, space, and a sense of connection within her work.
Her practice is rooted in intuition versus instinct: resisting the impulse to overthink or rely on logic, and instead following what feels most natural to her body. Painting becomes both process and reflection, a way of working through emotion and lived experience. She is drawn to the emotional undercurrent of her work, often writing fleeting thoughts, phrases, and ideas alongside her paintings that help guide each concurrent move.
Her work frequently explores themes of the feminine body, mind, and the natural world, seeking to honour their rhythms, tensions, and inherent strength.
Aly Louis works intuitively with both oil and acrylic, allowing mood and the needs of each piece to guide her choice of material. This fluid approach gives her paintings a sense of immediacy, while allowing each work to develop its own distinct surface and emotional rhythm.
A central part of her process is the preparation of the canvas itself. Aly stretches and primes each canvas by hand, treating this stage not as a technical formality, but as the first act of making. This ritual allows her to build a direct connection with the work before the painting begins.
For Aly, intention is embedded in every stage of the process. By remaining physically involved from the construction of the canvas through to the final painted surface, she creates works that feel personal and energetically charged, that are shaped as much by touch and presence as by colour and composition.
Materials & method“I find all of my emotions much more manageable when I root myself in creative practice. For me, life and creative expression are inexorably linked; neither can fully “Be” without the other. ”
