- Max Smolov
Max Smolov is a Russian-born artist based in Spain, whose contemporary practice is built on a deep fascination with spontaneous discovery and the shifting, unpredictable nature of the canvas. Born in Revda in Russia's Sverdlovsk region, he began his formal artistic path early at the Revda Art School before pursuing a parallel legal career at the Ural State Law Academy. After establishing professional art studios in Yekaterinburg and St. Petersburg, as well as founding the CABINET ABSTRACT contemporary art gallery and an adult painting school, Max relocated to Barcelona in 2026 to continue his practice in a wider European context. His work is an ongoing exploration of diverse visual languages, drawing on an established international exhibition background across Europe and the Americas to seamlessly fuse expressive studio work with active curatorial projects.
Max Smolov's process is rooted in direct engagement with the unexpected, letting chance, physical materials, and intuitive impulses guide each image's evolution. His development has been shaped by a refusal to settle on a solution too soon, creating an approach in which initial geometric layouts or recognisable elements intentionally clash, dissolve, and re-emerge through loose brushstrokes. Drawing inspiration from a wide range of stimuli, including global socio-political events, musical references, literary and historical influences, and classical structural movements, his working environment remains highly experimental. This fluid process extends from the studio canvas to unpredictable outdoor work, such as letting rain bleed his ink graphics or meticulously layering disparate found fragments to let new, accidental connections take shape.
Working across painting, drawing, and collage, Max builds each piece with a deep focus on compositional balance and the deliberate distribution of visual weight. His abstract and mixed-media creations offer no definitive answers or single narrative; instead, he envisions them as open-ended, living conversations. They function as atmospheric spaces where the viewer can find a story of their own, projecting their own philosophical response or conflicting feelings onto the surface.
The result is expressive yet grounded art shaped by unexpected visual harmonies and charged with the artist's response to form.

Max Smolov's collage practice is a fascinating exploration of juxtaposition, combining found fragments, text snippets, and diverse figures from everyday life to create entirely new visual compositions. By intentionally altering scales and distorting familiar proportions while layering unrelated elements, he encourages unexpected interactions to emerge organically on the page. Rather than imposing a single narrative, these carefully arranged pieces dissolve traditional meanings, creating mysterious, dreamlike scenes that let each viewer uncover a personal story within the layered imagery.
